If you only have 9 players active for a game, and you set your lineup to have 5 starters, then 1 backup for SG, SF, PF, and C but none for the PG.. if the PG gets in foul trouble or injured, does the lucky fan come into the game and play or does, say the backup SG sub in for the PG? Hope that's not too confusing.

As far as I know, the other back ups will switch positions to close the hole in the line up, there should be no lucky fan.

It may also happen, that the starting SG in your example switches to PG and the back up SG plays "starting" SG for the rest of the game.

purrfection is right, but to underline it, it won't come ever the best possible backup to this position. Maybe even your backup center gets a lot of minutes on PG in this case.

Most times this position will fill up with regular backups, only in OT you get there often regular starters.
