I have seen a lot of people with draft questions in the forum so here is my informal draft quide.
When setting your draft order you will have to consider the following Primary factors: Star Rating or Grade (How good the players current skill is), Potential (How good a player can become), & Age.

Here is the info I have gathered (please feel free to supplement it or add to it)
For the following Star ratings this is the salary ranges to expect from the players you draft.
5: Stars >3700
4 Stars: 2800-3700
3 Stars: 2300-2800
2 Stars: 1900-2300
1 star: <1900
You can get a better feel for a players salary if they have been scouted twice and you have a grade. (Disclaimer this is an estimate I will try in the upcoming draft to generate some better numbers on my own)
A+ > A > A- for A+ (+5000K) A (4500k) A- (3700-4500)
B+ > B > B-
C+ > C > C-
D+ > D > D-
F+ > F > F-

Potential is as follows:
1 Potential Ball: 1-2 (Announcer- Bench Warmer)
2 Potentia Ball: 3-4 (Role player - 6th man)
3 Potentia Ball: 5-6 (Starter-Allstar)
4 Potential Ball: 7-8 (Perennial Allstar - Superstar)
5 Potentia Ball: 9-11 (MVP - All-time Great)

(What potential can translate into)
Bench warmer - 8k
role player -13k
6th man - 15-17k
starter - 21-24k
star - 33-40k
allstar - 40-65k
perennial allstar - 80-100k
superstar - 125-145k
MVP -165-195k
hall of famer - Unknown
all-time great – Unknown

After considering the above actors then consider how close to winning your division you are.
If you are close and in a lower division I would put more weight into a players star rating and grades (if available)
If you are a season or two away I would put more weight on a players potential and age (with younger being better)
This may sound like common sense but if a player has a star rating of less than two drop them to the bottom of your draft order b/c you have at about 50% chance to get a three star or better from a player you have not even scouted. I would be happy to get other peoples input as my goal is to help newer players and in general help make the draft a little less crazy. Also feel free to ask me any questions you might have and I will answer them as to the best of my abilities.

Its a good idea having a guide like this as information is all over the place in this forum. Be good if there can be some more data collected to make a very accurate guide.

What are the chances of getting any given potential rating or age from a player who I've only scouted once? Are players whose age you don't know as likely to be 18 as they are to be 19? Is a potential of three stars just as likely as a potential of four stars or five stars? Thanks!

I would strengthen your last statement a little bit. Frankly, a 3 star recruit probably isn't going to be starting on any team with an owner who is paying attention. With your starting 300k you should be able to shore up your lineup at least to that. Basically, I would rather take a gamble on an unknown player than get someone who might be a backup. For me, I've moved everyone lower than 4 star / 2 potential to the bottom, since I would basically just cut them outright. I wouldn't expect to get more than 10k for anyone like that (3.4k salary / 6th man potential) on the transfer market, so I'd rather have a 1/20 chance at the player I never got to scout who will sell for 500k.

I have similar thoughts i'd rather take a risk on the unknown then an average player who won't be worth much either as a trainee or to sell.

Would you pick a player with a A+ ranking with 3 star potential or a player with a A ranking and 4 star potential. Also, how important a factor is the box score?

The ranking relates to their current skills. There isn't that much difference between A+ and A but there is a world of difference between a 3 potential and 4 potential. You would be able to train the 4 potential for a lot longer and have a better chance of training him for the national team. So rank the 4 potential guy higher. Box score isn't that important as its just 1 game. I would only use the box score if 2 players have the same star and/or potential ratings

i would go for a player with maximum value, and if i don't need the potential sell him and get a stroger one with "small potential".

This may sound like common sense but if a player has a star rating of less than two drop them to the bottom of your draft order b/c you have at about 50% chance to get a three star or better from a player you have not even scouted

you haven't, because the opponent(and also you) have scouted most of the good player before you reach that level. So the chanhce is very small you find something who have 3 Balls, but i also do it because you could be sure that those two ball guys are also only good for firing(maybe exceptions for high potential + 18Y). If you put them as your first draft pick, amybe you are right, but in this case you are normally just silly^^

but overall a good guide.
