I have an 18 year old trainee PG. He has respectable handling, passing, OD, ID, with mediocre JS. His potential is role player.

How close is he to maxed out? Is the potential rating evenly dispersed over all of his skills or is it focused on his most important skills? In other words, that respectable ID does not interfere as that is not important for a PG.

My plan is to train him for one on one and pop his driving, JS, and handling all one more rank and then give him two pops in defense to make him proficient. Think all of this is possible with his "role player" potential?

Thanks....

Role player potential won't be a factor for some time given how low is stats are at the moment.

Potential is connected to the total of the skills but different skills and combinations are weighted differently depending on the player's position. It's very loosely correlated to salary but no one seems to have accurately or precisely cracked the formula yet.

Role player potential means he can go up to 13k salary.
His salary is now 3200 .
So there is a long way ....
Yes you can reach your goal easily & I am sure you can improve him a lot more after that.
But bear in mind that if you donnt work on his Passing (which is the most important skill for a PG) then he will change position to a shooting guard perhaps.

0 Announcer: < 5k
1 Bench warmer: < 5k
2 Role player: < 9,5k
3 6th man: 11,5-13,5k,
4 Starter: 21-24k,
5 Star: 33-40k
6 AllStar: 43-65k
7 Perennial allstar: 80-100k
8 Superstar: 125-145k
9 MVP: 195-230k
10 Hall of famer: 500k+
11 All time great: 1M+

These are estimates, not fact. But, they are pretty accurate, I would say. For role player you will start experiencing a slowdown way before 13k. There is also a slowdown before the actual cap is reached, so 7-8k seems more reasonable to me. At 10k he will be fully caped. Just how useful do you think a player like that will be to you in the long run? I would rather train a lesser player with a little higher potential in your place, than waste time with someone like that. You may even be able to reach your goals with him, but I would suggest you set the bar higher, though ;)

Is there a way to see how much a player has improved after training? Or is that a noob question?

If you haven't read this yet than do it. Also DMI will increase after training, but it will also change as a function of game shape, so it is not a very reliable way to keep track of your training progress. Other than that there is no way other than just experience.

Great info.

Does salary change weekly or at the end of season?

I am a little concerned about some of the responses you have got from player who are not experienced and mostly have copied other responses from other people in the forums.
The soft is in some way related to salary, mainly because high salary players have alot of skills. The soft cap is not just a salary level. Multiskilled players reach their caps much faster, it is also because of this that some say that there are different salary caps for different positions. I am certain that the respectable ID does affect his cap as much as if he was a center.
I hope this helps you understand potential better. And remember people doesnt know the formula and training speed also slowes down with age regardles of the potential cap.

Multiskilled players reach their caps much faster,

To clarify this - multiskilled players hit the cap at a lower salary. And I would not say it is a MUCH lower salary. A well-balanced SF seems to hit his cap in the $40-45K range, which is still getting close to $60K.

My observation is that there is probably just one cap formula for all players, which is why we see differences by position. Guard skills seem to count less towards the cap, in particular passing and handling.

Also, a multiskilled player does not hit his cap faster in terms of training time. My player Wendon took a lot longer, time wise, to hit his cap. Yes, his salary is lower, but training so many skills to high levels still takes time.

So conclusion: you can train a player longer, cap wise, if he is multi-skilled. Such a player is probably much more useful than the average allstar player and has a lower salary. So why does everyone want players with no secondary skills again?
