Hi, hello, how are you?

As some of you may know, about a month ago I was appointed as LA for the UK. A job that, to be honest, isn't too hard (I basically take out "z"s and put in "u"s). I soon noticed that I not only had access to change text on static pages, but I also had access to the match viewer too. So I decided that after I'd checked through everything else on the site (a job that I still need to do!) that I would try and freshen up the text in the match viewer, with the aim to make it a bit more entertaining. Soon after having this eurika moment however I was promoted to GM which has since taken up most of my free time. But just recently there appears to have been a lull in cheating (or an increase in quality, depending how you see things) so I've had the hours that's been needed to re-jig the old text in the match viewer.

So here it is folks. I've decided to call it a project as I will aim to freshen up the text every 6-12 months, time allowing. I think even re-jigging words every few seasons will make the matches a little less boring to watch. I've tried to spice most things up, adding a few phrases I've pick up over the years watching basketball which hopefully makes the games appear more exciting.

As this is a "project" I'm very interested in feedback. After your next game lemme know what you think. Also be on the look out for spelling mistakes and missed full-stops. Just to be clear though I have no access to the game engine code; the BB team are well aware of the bugs (own defenders rotating onto your own players, alley-oops with no assists credited) - these go on the bugs forum - there's nothing I can do.

Also keep in mind that if you hate it, which some people inevitably will, you can always switch back to English (US) in all of it's ancient glory. Ooo that reminds me, to see this you will need to have English (UK) selected as your language. Go here to change it -

I hope you enjoy the changes and you feel it was time well spent.

Now... back to the tickets!

The first thing I've noticed is that the basics need to stay basic. I've put in a little "player 2 is given a nod from the scorer for his good assist" which is already getting a little annoying. I'm going to have to keep the overly repeated lines basic, I think.

Well, did you have a look? The text is not actually "altered" as such, it just sounds more like the way people speak around here :)

Seriously. The speech manners in UK and US are different... I bet all users in the UK appreciate the new lines!

Thanks for your feedback kozlodoev, it's truely appriciated. Yeah, one of the reasons I made a public announcement was because I didn't want to do this "on the sly". I really wanted to get some freeback from the BBs and other GMs. I was aware making what could be called unneccessary changes to the match viewer might be looked on poorly but I really urge everyone to actually watch a match under the English (UK) language settings before damning what I've done. As Elboss said, I think when you watch a match you'll see what I've done actually falls under the heading of "translation". I can see how the match viewer works, and I think when you watch it you'll agree I've kept the spirit of the engine in tact, and merely made what is reported a bit more interesting.

If the concencous from up above is I've done something I shouldn't then changing it back will take less than 20 minutes. But I hope when people actually run the match viewer through our language setting you'll see that it makes the game more entertaining for the users; gives the users a better connection to their players and hopefully gets them more involved with the game. In the end what I've done is in good spirits and with good intentions!

(Note: If you're looking for serious responses, skip this one.)

If you can translate from US to UK like Mr. B, The Gentleman Rhymer, then I'm all for it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6t28COxEp2k :)

Nice one hoff! I like his hats

Ever watched a Knicks home game? I was half tempted to do a Walt Clyde Frazier version. "Willin' and drillin'"!

It's really good Soel. Your phrasing is so much more natural than the North American English.

A couple of things, 'pinpoint pass' is really irritating me for some reason. If it's a stock phrase, maybe drop the alliteration?

Bug report
"read the passing lane" should be "reads the passing lane"

Overall, it's definitely an improvement and I'll be upset if you're forced to change it back.

I've three suggestions to maybe improve readability even more.

Instead of

"pinpoint pass"

try the more simple

"player x finds player y in space"

Instead of
"player x came off the bench to replace player y"
try the more simple
"player x leaves the bench to replace player y"

Finally, instead of

"player x corrals the loose ball with one hand"
try
"player x claims the loose ball with a one-handed grab"
