New Draft Math
or, Why I Won’t Spend $30,000 on Training Ever Again
The last couple of seasons, I thought I was going to finish very near the bottom of the standings in my league, and so I did some scouting.
Every season, we have 14 weeks for scouting (maybe I’m off by a week?). If scouting was done the same every week:
Scouting 0 players: $0
Scouting 1 player: $70k
Scouting 2 players: $140k
Scouting 3 players: $280k
My draft picks have not been all that great in recent seasons. This season, in search of better rookies to train, I just spent $76k on two players, both of whom are much better for training than any of the players I drafted from the #7 spot in the draft order. The last time I decided on a specific training course in spite of my bad rookies, I was also able to find a better player on the TL to train than any player I drafted, and he only cost $20k. (Okay, someone thought my #1 pick last season was worth $750k on the TL, which I happily took since I was even training the guy! So nice draft picks can payoff, even if I don’t assign the same player-value to them all as other do, as the team that overpaid for my rookie demonstrates.)
Clearly, until the system changes, I could scout like mad and maybe get lucky. Or, for the same cost as scouting 1 player each week, pocket the savings and spend it on a player that fits my training scheme. Anyone think I’m scouting much this season?
Makes me wonder why anyone would want to scout, unless they just know that they'll finish in last place and want to take a chance they'll stumble on a really great draftee.
Don't ask what sort of Chunks they are, you probably don't want to know. Blowing Chunks since Season 4!
