Ok, this game hasnt even reached halftime yet and my team has already committed 16 fouls. This has definitely not happened before, and I had to stop watching the game because it was just plain painful. What is the meaning of this?

Your defence just isn't up to scratch, so instead of trying to defend, they try and stop them from scoring by any means necessary, hence the large number of fouls.

No, the same thing happened in my game, and I'm playing against a team with only
one
active player -- who they didn't even dress, so it was all against Lucky Fans. And all my stud players (some of whom cost $30K/week) fouled out.

If the other team plays less than 3 players, then it is a walkover, at which point the match viewer should be ignored as it isn't the actual match.
