I got a mail from someone, telling me that he likes one of my players on sale but doesn't have enough money, and wants to "trade". How does one do this?

You can´t trade players. I suppose that he means to put the player again at transfer list cheaper than now if you don´t sell the player.

It's not really a trade. It would be the two of you putting two players on sale, continuing bidding on each other so you reach the same price for both. It's basically a double sale, looks like a trade because you don't need the final sum on your hands to do it; you just need a small starting amount of money, and bidding on each other will support the ongoing offers.

And also hope that other people do not outbid you.

Theres a reason why trading is not allowed. If you put guys on the transfer market, its free for all and everyone can bid on him

My understanding is that this is explicitly against the rules and could result in getting banned.

normally you won't get banned for it, but the transfer price is often reduced - and be warned i like to report such trades ;) If he needs money to buy your player, he could sell his scrubs also to another team which have also the advantage to you that you don't have to buy a player who didn't fitexactly your wishes. And both players get sold fpr their value

Another thing which could happen, you bid on his player and he is lucky to sell him for a high price and don't bid on yours ;)

Well, it's not against the rules. Why would it be? It's two entirely different sales, there's no guarantee to successfully complete such a "trade", and anyone else can bid if he wants.
There's no potential ban doing that. You could make a case for a ban if both teams sell their guys well over their value, but at market value there's no reason to ban anyone.
If you want to be sure, just submit the "trade" to a GM before doing it, and see if it's a fair sale.

As long as a player is sold at fair market value and no rules are broken, it is a fair transfer. The concept of trade is not used in the BuzzerBeater transfer system, they are individual transfers. GMs don't provide any transfer evaluation services and okay trades.
