Just a lil something I wrote on my blog for fun :) Not gonna advertise my blog address here in case it gets me into trouble (you can drop me a PM if you want to comment on the actual blog post)... but do tell me if I missed any type... or if you have something to add to it :)
What kinda baller are you?
I reckon that a person's style and attitude on the court reflects very much the person they are off the court. Perhaps this isn't true with professional basketball players. But then again I've never balled with professional players. State players yes. National players, I don't quite recall.
Obviously I'm not gonna mention names here, but this is based on my experience from balling for a good 12 years (with a hiatus here and there) now and running with different people.
The player: The Machine
The Machine emphasises methodology. He doesn't care if its not pretty. He doesn't care if people wonder 'wtf kinda-shot-is-that'? As long as the ball goes in and the point counts. Basketball is 90% technique and 10% heart. From what offence style to run, the screens, the pick and rolls, everything is done to achieve the highest probability of scoring.
The person: Mr Practical
Normally a very, very practical and down to earth person. If you want advice, this is the person to turn to. If you want some one to agree with you, look some where else. Cos this dude doesn't ice the cake with sugar. Hell, he doesn't give you cake at all. Its all mains. The necessary and pertinent stuff that you need to consider, whether you like it or not.
The player: The Self Made Baller
The Self Made Baller spends hours and hours on practice. From the basics of dribbling to popping that jumper. Everything was built with sweat and hard work. Not born with athletic or enough talent, this player makes up for it all by endless drills and training. While not amazing or outstanding in the court, this type of player normally holds his own. Often, times they feel like they have something to prove, and go out of their way to play extra hard. And very often extra dumb.
The person: Mr Insecure
I've nothing against hard working people. But the problem lies in the fact that most of the time, these people practice to impress. Or want to be good to stand out. Fair enough, you should be able to reap the fruits of your toil. However, more often than not, the insecurity these kind of people feel move them to make stupid decisions or choices. On a good day, they make great friends or team mates. When they are out to prove something, just be careful you don't get caught up in the person hype or worse still, in the way of him show boating.
The player: The Hotshot
If a baby can be born with a silver spoon, these guys were born with a basketball. Naturally inclined towards the game and gifted, these players command a presence in the court. These are the kinda players everyone envies and wants to be. They react very poorly to 'challenges' from players they deem as less capable as they are. Take a shot in his face and make it, and The Hotshot will go out of his way to take the next 20 shots in yours.... even if he makes 1 of 20.
The person: The Peacock
Having people envy and admire your abilities is definitely a pleasant experience. However, when you get people flattering you 24/7, it does have the effect of inflating your ego to epic proportions. When you can do no wrong, you tend to make rash decisions. Or worse still, you feel that it is your God given right to make decisions on behalf of others because you're more capable than they are. Good for them if it turns out well. Not so great, when these kind of people mess up and you have to clean up the mess.
