Players never retire. If you don't want a player you can sell him or fire him. But if you want to keep a player you can keep him forever.
Note that if you fire a player you cannot get them back.
Also note, that once a player reaches around 32 years old his skills will start to slowly drop down over time. As he gets older his skills will drop quicker.
