How do they work? It doesn't appear to make any sense on first glance...

Seems kinda random. No one in my league has me as a rival.

The only sure thing is that the result of the game against your rival affects a lot your fan survey.

I think the way your rival is chosen is totally random. But if your rival is weaker than you, I think it helps because by winning against your rival, you get more balls on your one of the fan survey categories "the team played well against the hated rival" etc, which helps to increase your merchandise and the attendence.

Seems kinda random.

The rival is not chosen randomly, as long as you have some history with the teams in your conference. If you come to a new league, the selection may very well be random.

The exact process is not known, but past games (number of games and how close they were) affect the rivalry between two teams. You get the team that you have the "strongest" (not necessarily longest I guess) history with as your rival. However, one team can only appear as the rival of two other teams, so you may end up with your second biggest rival or so.

My guess is the process uses similar calculations as country/world ranking, which BB-Charles discusses here: (131496.29). I quote: "The rankings take into account the importance of each game, the result, and the strength of the opponent (the strength of the players actually playing in the game, not the overall strength of the roster)."

It would make sense to me both from programming and conceptual point of view that the rival is chosen based on similar calculations.

My rival is the team I played in the semis last season.
I think another team could also be my rival because I have played a few games with him.

Can you smell what the Hobos are cooking... oh wait its just Roger. (18085274)

Ok that makes its only my 2nd season in my league so no one has played enough close games against me to create to create a riverly wheras my rival is the team i lost to in last seasons playoffs.
