Welcome to the glitz and glamour of the season 13 ABBL awards ceremony! We have just witnessed the players and their WAGs on the green carpet, with the obvious highlight being Robby Lacy in his bright red suit, matching his hair. Anyway, on with the awards...

And the first award is

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

Second (tie) - Mathias Gaetano (Coolcats)

After an being caught sleeping with the coach's daughter in the prior to season 12, Gaetano was placed in the doghouse. However, Gaetano found photos of his coach in an incriminating position with the manager of Pancakes with Jam and Cream, and was restored to the starting lineup for season 13, where the old dog had perhaps his best season ever.

Season 12 stats: 10.1 pts, 2.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 45% FG, 0.5 stl, (17.5 mins)
Season 13 stats: 20.2 pts, 4.8 rebounds, 4.8 assists, 44% FG, 2 stls (35.4 mins)

Second (tie) - Adne Grindheim (Phoenix)

After being a solid player last season, Grindheim became a genuine star of the league this season, with a massive boost in FG%. His season culminated in a 50 point performance against the Black Label Society.

Season 12 stats: 13.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.1 blocks, 42% FG (38.7 mins)
Season 13 stats: 17.3 points, 14.3 rebounds, 1.9 blocks, 53% FG (41 mins)

Second (tie) - Ciro Cesar Bitalco

After showing signs of developing last season, Bitalco became a go-to guy for the Flames at SG this season, with an impressive leap in his scoring average. However, his season ended in disappointment, after slipping on a cleverly concealed oil spill at Pancakes arena, in the Flames finals loss, and he will miss the beginning of next season.
,
Season 12 stats: 11.7 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 39% FG (35 mins)
Season 13 stats: 16.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 42% FG (35 mins)

First - Reni Doyle (Giants)

Reni developed into a top quality ABBL F/C this season, with a top notch allround season. Reni had showed that he had a solid defensive side to his game in the past, but this season he added an offensive side to his game, and was relied upon to do a large part of the work for the Giants at both ends of the floor. Reni's season was highlighted by a 31 point performance against Doncaster, and he frequntly managed double doubles, often with 20+ points. For his performances this season, Reni Doyle is the ABBLs most improved player for season 13!

Season 12 stats: 9.9 points, 12.8 rebounds, 1 block, 47% FG (30 mins)
Season 13 stats: 14.1 points, 15.7 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, 47% FG (33 mins)

6TH MAN OF THE YEAR

Robby Lacy (Jets) - 14.3 points, 3.9 boards, 3.5 assists in 22.8 minutes

The Avalon Jets used a very deep bench this season with nobody playing more than 29 minutes average for the season but Robby Lacy was the clear powerhouse off the bench. The Jets all time scoring and assists record holder led his team in points this season and was 2nd behind only National star Tyler Chowdhary in assists despite playing just 22 minutes per game.
His top game of the season was a 38 point, 9 assist explosion in an away game against the Doncaster Flames, leading his teams 4th quarter comeback in the 11 point win.

2nd Place

Barrett Meads (Giants) - 11.0 points, 7.0 boards, 3.2 assists, 1 block in 23.5 minutes

Meads was a big spark off the bench for the Lara Giants this season, coming in with his trademark hustle and doing whatever his team needed from scoring and playmaking (his 3.2 assists were second behind only PG Archer Deckert) to rebounding and tough, hardnosed defense.

3rd Place

Garth Larbi (Crushers) - 9.5 points, 10.2 boards, 1.1 blocks, 0.8 steals in 23.3 minutes

Garth Larbi regained his starting position on the team when Portugese big man Diogo Bernardo Laranjeiro was shipped out after a disappointing season but Larbi was coming off the bench for the majority of the season and really earned his starting role again.
He averaged nearly a double double while coming off the bench and played some solid defense as well with his best game being a big effort against the Wombats with 31 points, 22 rebounds and 5 blocks.

ABBL ALL DEFENSIVE TEAM

C: Altair Dos Santos (BHB) - 15.3 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 0.3 steals
The big Brazillian was a monster inside, his defensive presence in the paint highlighted in Week 9 with back to back games of 7 and 8 blocks respectively.

F: Fang Wenxin - (Wombats) - 15.5 rebounds, 1.7 blocks, 0.9 steals
The Lewisham enforcer has controlled the Wombats paint all season and continues to be a dominating defensive stopper, often earning game time over his higher paid team mates.

F: Wazza Kennerley (Beers) - 7.2 rebounds, 0.7 blocks, 2.2 steals
Wazza was a lone horse for the Berwick Beers but he hustled all season long and led the league in steals, swiping 2.2 a game.

G: Jonas Poppenbuttel (BLS) - 5.5 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, 1.5 steals
The aging German dogged his opponenets all season long and played some great help defense with 1.1 blocks and 1.5 steals per game on average.

G: Matias Gaetano (Coolcats) - 4.8 rebounds, 0.2 blocks, 2.0 steals
The Coolcats point guard rewarded his coach's faith and increased playing time with a career season, hustling for an impressive 4.8 rebounds at the point guard spot and finishing 2nd in the league with 2.0 steals per game.

So who actually 'picked' these awards? it seems like players from teams that aren't as active on the forum had some very competitive players that failed to crack a mention.

C-Cat, mllama and myself collaborated on each award, went through stats, had discussions etc

None of it was based on forum activity though. If any of the awards were based on their managers, none of the Coolcats players would get a mention for example because Shoei has been the most inactive manager in the league.

Why, who do you think should have been in there somewhere?

Perhaps the connection is between the active users being more successful? Winning teams are more likely to have players represented in most awards then losing teams who's players cant be that really be that impressive if there constantly losing now can they?

Anyway I assume your referring to dire and llama's players? wouldn't happen to have anything to do with them being 2 of the best teams in the country though? I only have 1 player represented so cant be talking about my players and we are the 3 most active. Coachnoodles is also one of the most active ones with just 1 player also...

I think Coolcats is the the most represented and he's basically a bot :s

Thanks for your reply dire. It's nice to know that some sort of science went into it.

One thing I noticed straight out was that Revasio (Meateors) missed out on any selection to every team. The guy led the league in rebounding and in my opinion should have been given some further consideration. but for the purpose of this, lets just compare him to dos Santos (BHB), the C in the third team.

C: Altair dos Santos (Billy Hoyles Boys)
11.3ppg, 15.3rpg, 2.6blk, 48% FG, 15.5 Rating (plus 0.3spg, 2.2 fpg)

C: Eusebio Ravasio (Meateors)
11.9ppg, 18.4rpg, 1.2blk, 34% FG, 12.0 Rating (plus 1.2spg, 1.9fpg)

I understand that Ravasio's points aren't at a good clip but I personally would have placed him in the third team.

Two other high scoring guards were omitted. I for one am not saying they should be included (as one happens to be my player). Those players are Nemkovich (Meateors) and Cima (Haggards).

Were the weekly 'awards' taken into account? if so, lets be reminded that the first 2 weeks there were no writeups and on some weeks there were 2 runner up awards given per conference and other weeks just the one.

Cima, 2 weekly mvps, 1 runner up (unlucky to miss out on some)
Nemkovich, 1 weekly mvp, 1 runner up.

when compared to

Couta, 1 win, 1 r/u
Gaetano, 1 win, 0 r/u

G: Anthony Cima (Haggards)
23.9ppg, 3.4apg, 4.6rpg, 1.5spg, 44% FG, 28% 3pt, 12.6 Rating

G: Nikita Nemkovich (Meateors)
25.1ppg, 2.4apg, 3.5rpg, 2.0spg, 40% FG, 38% 3pt, 12.0 Rating

when compared to other 'all ABBL # team' guards.

G: Matías Gaetano (CoolCats)
20.2ppg, 4.8rpg, 4.8apg, 2.0spg, 44% FG, 38% 3pt, 14.0 Rating

G: Sui Haili (CoolCats)
23.4ppg, 3.6apg, 2.2rpg, 1.4spg, 48% FG, 41% 3pt, 14.0 Rating

G: Flaviu Dobrin (Phoenix 5)
19.4ppg, 8.8apg, 3.0rpg, 1.0spg, 45%FG, 34% 3pt, 12.0 Rating

I would have placed Nemkovich and Cima on par, if not ahead statistically with these three. Granted the Haggards and the Meateors were schooled by better oppostion but if you guys wanted to count how successful their team is on the court then I can't really argue with that.

After reading what I have written I apologise if this comes out rather strong as I am by no means trying to insult or discredit your opinions. I am just adding my opinion. dire, I thank you for taking the time to ask me what I thought.

"Perhaps the connection is between the active users being more successful? Winning teams are more likely to have players represented in most awards then losing teams who's players cant be that really be that impressive if there constantly losing now can they?"- C-Cat

That is a verty simplistic way to look at it. That statement also implies that a "losing" team cannot have "impressive" players which even you should know is not true.

Hey I only have 2 mentions so far

BLS and Coolcats probably have the most mentions, but that's fair enough, they are the two teams with the best record.

I think we tried to take everything into account in these awards - including points, FG%, defense, rebounds, assists.... where two players were close, team success played a big part to. I think they are a fair representation of the division this season, for the most part we reached a consensus on the decisions.

Like any awards, there are unlucky players, but we can't fit em all in!

Anyway, the MVP will be up shortly (oh the suspense)
