I have a major question regarding post game player rankings.

The following line come from the same game

C R. Martín 20 0 - 1 0 - 1 1 - 2 1 4 0 2 0 0 2 1 9.5

C K. Hirsch 15 7 - 11 0 - 0 2 - 4 3 5 1 1 2 1 0 16 9.5

Both were rated at a 9.5. I would definitely choose the second. 16 pts 5 boards 2 steal and a block compared to 1 point 4 reb and 2 TOs.

Is the rating an accurate tool to gauge a player. Based on this situation definitely not.

the ratings is a mix betwen performance and quality, where quality is lot more important.

If u watch players like Kobe, who sometimes have a bad day too but you still see that they have a good shooting technic with a good and fast release and those stuff is reflected into the rating.

One thing the stats ignore but is taken into account in the ratings is defense.

Also, playing less minutes usually result in higher ratings.

but in my experience, the impact of defense isn't that big.

It is an evaluation of players skills, mainly defensive skills. In my experience, ratings depends on this 7 elements:

1. Defense - Directly related with ID, ED or both in case of SF. - Taking a SF with both defenses on 9 - you can give him approx. 10 rating.

2. Game performance - If our SF had a very good day, and you have to judge it on his efficiency (calculating by yourself, or buzzer manager). Approx. eff. +15 is +0,5 in his rating. So efficiency +45 would change our example SF to: 11,5

3. Due to player stamina how many minutes he played. This is what really seem to be a wrong judgement in BB of evaluating a player game. Players that have been on the court a few minutes (+5) would have a higher rating than player that have been playing all the game. Even if they did not grab any rebound, take a shot or give a dime. It doesn't make a lot of sense.

If the player' stamina is low you will se a consistent decrease in his rating if he plays most part of the game. Supposing our SF have Stamina 3 or 4 - I would change his rating this way. 10 min on the court = 12,5; 40 min = 10,5.

4. Opponents defense. If our SF defenses were less effective than his opponent' his rating will decrease.

5. How the player was performing in the tactic we choose. As an example one of my center with tremendous IS changes his value to 13 when I play look inside and switch to 11 when I play outside tactics.

6. His game shape.

7. Finally the position we choose. If you play a C as PG you will see a big decrease. In my experience this is a very good way to scout your opponent' players secundary skills. Comparing how much he was rated playing in different position. You can guess if those player have good or bad secundaries.

just my point of view

I don't have much experience with SF who are pure defenders, but i got some defense comparision with C.

I think you could easily spot, the games where this C played on Point Guard:
(8049854)
I won't tell his skills, but he is an very good defender on C - but when he defends on c he gets 1 till 1,5 more rating points then when he defends the PG and he isn't a good perimeter defender.

Also when my OD 4 ID 16 PF, plays on SF position and defends there he only makes 0,5 Rating point less then when he defends on C(it was an accident). He always performs around 11 there, so his IS is valued much bigger.

So for me the effect of pure defensiv skills, seems to be pretty low.

Else quite a good list, but i want to add Enthusiam(or is it called motivation) as extra points who also gives a noticeable bonus.
