NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has told the team to end discussions on the Carmelo Anthony deal.

In a news conference before Wednesday night's game against Utah, Prokhorov said he decided on Tuesday to stop pursuit of the Nuggets All-Star forward, unhappy with how things played out in public.

The new owner says the deal took too long and became too expensive.

"I'm not happy with the way ... this deal has gone until now," said Prokhorov. "It has taken too long. It has been played out in public and it certainly has taken a toll on the players and I believe that it has cost us several games. I think management did a great job, but there comes a time when the price is simply too expensive. I'm instructing our team to walk away from the deal.

"And the meeting that was our management was supposed to have in Denver with Carmelo tomorrow is hereby canceled."

Previously, New Jersey had offered to ship six players and at least two first-round draft picks to Denver in a deal that would have sent Anthony to the Nets along with former Pistons teammates Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton.

"I never met with Carmelo and I never spoke to him," Prokhorov said. "Maybe he sent me e-mail, but really I don't use computers."

Good on Prokhorov.
I'd say that it's Melo playing this out, and he overstepped. Never wise to annoy off a billionaire with Russian mob connections!

Yeah, good move from the Nets i reckon. I thought they were going to give up too much for Melo anyway and now they can keep their picks, work on the young talent etc.

I like this Prokhorov guy.

So, where will Carmelo end? I don't see him lengthen his contract in Denver. He doesn't have a lots of solution either.

Maybe he goes free agent and Denver gets nothing or works a sign and trade deal with the eventual team....

He's going to the Knicks. Melo and Amare and Gallo going to bring the chip back to NYC.

Nah man, don't sell dreams like that! Do you really believe that Melo to NYC is feasible? What about the Bulls?

Firstly: absolutely, it's feasible. Now that the Nyets have pulled out? I'd say even probable. I am even beginning to believe that Melo IS prepared to go to FA, in the belief that he can make up the cash lost (by not signing an extension) via the bigger market NYC gives him. Endorsements in NYC/LA are far more lucrative.

He's going to the Knicks. Melo and Amare and Gallo going to bring the chip back to NYC.

On your second sentence: who's going to play D?
