I am having a difficult time understanding the relationship between +/- and player rating, if there is one. Take this game

(29548484)

My power forward has a 14 rating and a great game with 28 points, 15 rebounds etc. and yet his +/- is -3 ?? Any help understanding this new rating system would be appreciated.

The +/- rating is just a raw measure, it doesn't correlate directly to your player's rating. It depends a lot on who was alongside him on the floor and who he went up against. I wouldn't read much into some +/- ratings. However, his PF backup had a +/- of +19 in just 7 minutes! That's really amazing... Did he play those 7 minutes in one bunch or in different ones? Either way, you made some big runs with him on the floor. In this case the +/- DOES show that the team played really well with him on the floor

+/- isn't a rating; it's a stat.

The +/- shows the number of points your team scored in comparison to the number of points the opponent scored while he was on the floor.... kinda confusing the way I said it; let me explain better.

So Johnny was on the court for 20 minutes. During the 20 minutes he was on the court, his team scored 43 points, and his opponents scored 38 points. Therefore, his +/- will show as 5.
Bob was on the court for the other 28 minutes of the game. During those 28 minutes, his team scored 47 points, and his opponents scored 53 points. That would mean his +/- was -6.

You can get the rating by taking the number of points scored while the player was on the court, and subtracting the points scored by the opposing team while the player was on the court.

Yes, it just shows what the points difference is during the time the player was on the court. To me it's a useless stat. What does it tell you that you don't already know?
When you lose, your reserves will have a higher number, and when you win, your starters will have better scores.

Thank you all for your responses. I have a much better understanding of that "stat" now.
