I know this may be dumb, but the cut off lines in the league standings don't make much sense to me. There is one after 5th and one after 7th place. What are they for?

The 6 and 7 seeds play a relegation series; 6 seed in each conference plays the 7 seed in the other.
The 8 seed automatically demotes if there's a lower division that can accommodate them.
At least that's what I'd guess they're for.
