Name Creation - the commonly requested, yet never will be implemented, but rightfully will never be implemented.

Its a rule of thumb that the following should never be affected:

1. Users have the freedom to create any name they wish. Which means no limitation to innapropriate/humorous/celebrity names...
2. Players names change from previous name given. One year the player name is Michael Jordan, then someone changes to Poopy McPartyPants, and then you can't find Michael Jordan cause his name now is Poopy McPartyPants.
3. Should be reasonable to implement
4. Diversity of names still the same as before, so we won't have in the extreme example suddenly 50% of the players names being Michael Jordan.
5. Should not require monitoring for inappropriate even if slightly

I thought to myself while it may not be necessary, it is something that people would love to have as its been expressed frequently, to have a way that users can choose names. I thought when you draft a player, which names are yet to be generated, user can have the option to choose from 10 random names. Would simply be using the BB random name generator, just doing it 10 times and giving user to choose from those 10 what names they like the player to be. Players names are unrevealed before start of next season, so the user is given the choice before then a list of 10 random names to which he can choose the names from those list.

The number of different names to choose from should be the real debate. Possibly reduce to 5 random names. Below are things to consider:

Pros
*Finally the awesome tool is available that people want
*Some names come as awkward or unappealing for basketball players. Choosing from pool of names would reduce it (By awkward I don't mean funny or cool, just a boring or undesirable name)

Cons
* The more names, the more likelihood that random name such as "Michael Jordan", "Dick Cheney" will pop which likely the user would choose that name.
* For humor, players may choose names that come off the funniest of the choices available.

Because of those cons, You don't want too many names to choose from which is why 10 might be too much. Keep in mind that whatever name will come, it's not a user creation and it comes from the same BB random name generator that generates the names as they are right now.

I don't see this as being adding much value to the player's BB experience.

The 10 names it generates are random in either case so what point is there from choosing 1 of 10 random names or just sticking with the one you were given to begin with?

As also pointed out to you, it will lag the offseason processing more if you are adding more processes to it.

I also don't think it realistic that you can choose a players name. Its like saying well lets call Jason Kidd, Lebron James, because Lebron James is a much cooler name. No Kidding!

Honestly after I posted this, soon right after I realized 10 was too much and should be reduced down to 3. In response to the Lebron James comment, this idea actually works in favor of this when you think about it. This is no stab at BB but the names aren't as cool as in real life. So look at the bottom option of 3 Random American names (randomly made by me, if anyway associated with your name or your players names its completely coincidental):

1. Sedwig Loomis

2. Henry Baugharter

3. Darius Woods

Sure there be few here and there that would choose option 1 or 2 but its safe to say choice 3 is most popular, it's definitely the most NBA like name. Users being able to choose names would actually escalate more cool names but not outrageous amount because there would always be those cases where the 3 just sound normal, so the cool name factor in this case works just perfect.

As mentioned in the other forum for the face generator, they all happen before the offseason and all what it is, it's just submitting of one name and not 3, or 10, just 1. Everything that is generated can happen slowly and gradually from the start of the season just like with the draft info starts to appear in midseason as it can be generated slowly from beginning of the season to midseason which is like 2 months in real life.

Cant say i mind having my players named for me anyway

and this is maybe the thing, which might be possible maybe not anymore for you but in general it should be possible to feed the name database during registration so that someday a player get created with your name.

Even if it make it a bit more complicated, when we(GM) process signups.

You already get 3 random names each season. Just fire the 2 guys with the uncool names. :-)
