I just started this game but from my perspective you should play around with the depth chart. If you have 5 starters and 1 person who is great in most positions, place that person as their first backup. That way if the coach decides the starter can come off the bench, he may swap positions for another player instead of seating the backup.
You can place 1 person in multiple backup positions.

Or you could focus more on individualized positions. Pick a specialty for him. I think it would be okay for him to cover 2 positions, but 3 or 4 is too much. "Jack of All, Master of None" fits this situation.

you won't get close to 36 min with him, at least without blowout. personally i think that backuping more then 2 positions is bad.

I disagree a little bit with not backing up multiple positions... first to answer your question, the only way to get the backup big minutes is if he is as good or slightly better than the starter. Case in point the guy on my team Netos Exasferos is a great PF SF option and so alot of games i'll start a slightly worse (not by much) pf and a slightly worse Sf and have him backup both.... when i have done this he has gotten good minutes and really helped my team. I think of it as the Lamar Odom effect, the starters are good players and serve a purpose but by backing him up multiple positions he gets enough run to really impact the game.

case in point...

Perhaps he plays well. But perhaps you're misusing him in this case as well. He averaged a higher game score than the other guys at his position but always took fewer shots than at least one of the guys he was backing up. If he's truly better, then wouldn't you want him in a position where he's taking more shots, even if it means relegating him to one spot per game?

And also, the first 2 games were blowouts, and he got right at 30 minutes. (Starter's minutes for a blowout). But in the closer game(the third one there) he only got 22 minutes while having a game score par to his norm despite your coach using 8 players (instead of the 10 he used in the other two). So unless you know you're gonna dominate in your game the tactic doesn't seem to work as desired. And if you're gonna dominate regardless it doesn't tend to matter if you have minor lineup quirks...

edit: also if he was just better defensively and inferior offensively to both players that could be the case that he should be taking less shots. But it doesn't point to much about minute distribution that you're going for based on those 3 games to me still
