Would any of you buy a player just for defense so he can guard the best offensive player on the opposition even if he would be bad on offense? Would you start that kind of player?

I use such players quite a bit. Have to make sure he has fairly decent passing though. You don't want him to be forced to take shots.

I'd assume he means that the Artest type player is more effective than the Melo type because in his experiences with player skills, excellent defensive skills seem to have more of an impact than having a player with excellent offensive skills. I'd say so as well. There is an abundance of skills that contribute to how successful a player is on offense at certain positions, but on the defensive side, there are only 3: inside defense, outside defense and shot blocking. It's all a balancing act in the end. This next season, I'm going to really bolster my team's defense and see how much of a difference it makes first hand.

bomb explained it quite good, you could compensate quite easily to have a player who do nothing in offense while a player who have trouble to defend will hurt you even when he is offensiv great.

A melo Type player is not always worse than a artest type player. The reason why it would seem so is that you need 5 players that can play defense (preferably 10) while you only truly need 1 or two guys who are good scorers. A team of Artest type players would be just as bad as a team of Melo type players. However in a great team there should not be any melo type players, but even good teams have artest type players.

in 5 of 5 you are probadly right, but a team with 2 artest players could still be a contender without having so superior rest(if your artest's are fitting to your ofensiv i played a long time ago an outside attack with 2 centers without IS but better Rebs and ID for example, i missed some points through it mostly put back but it was cheaper and the opponent hopefully had some extra trouble to score too). But one Melo need a lot to compensate.

And artest are a lot cheaper salary wise, and on the tl.

Good answers. I'm mainly asking because I need help defensively but I would hate to have to lose some offense for it.

Well....Melo isn't nearly as useless on defense as people make him seem.

So it's not like he'd be a total liability out there. In fact I wouldn't even rate Melo's D at below average, he just has higher expectations as a superstar player to perform at that level on both ends, which he doesn't always do.

That said, how bad could a player with 20 JS and decent rebounding be?
