i was 20 - 2, and i read that it wasn't enough to promote. but what if you win the championship with a 20 - 2 record? would i promote?

If you win the playoffs, you will be guaranteed promotion.

If you fail to win, you might get lucky and still promote via a bot cleanup. With a 20-2 record, I'd say you have a fair chance of that.
