Is it safe to say that the forwards plays the wings. The PG plays the top, and the SG runs along the bottom? Has anyone done any research on the effects of playing certain players in different positions in the 1-3-1?

I not really sure but it would seem like the center of the 3 would be more inside than the guys on the sides. so I would think that the engine plays the PF would be below the PG and above the C while the SF and SG took the wings

No coach would ever play his Center at the top or bottom of a 1-3-1 defense. You need speed there to cover a ton of ground side to side. You can pretty much bet that the Center is in the very middle of the entire defense because that spot requires the least movement.
I agree with the OP. The guards are at the top and bottom while the 2 forwards are on the sides. And that formation explains why it's very effective covering outside based offenses but the worst rebounding formation in the game.
