really buzzerbeater? a player can't make a wide open lay-up if his inside shot isn't above 2?

is it just me who thinks that players should just automatically make lay-ups? regardless of what their IS is. its ridiculous to think that i have to take a couple of weeks to train my PG's IS just so he can make lay-ups...

Driving layups are based on your player's driving skill not his inside shot skill. If he can't dribble and move at the same time why should he be able to make a layup?

Don't forget he may be driving on guards with sensational OD and when he gets to the basket may be met by a big man with great ID or SB. If player's driving is a lot lower than their JS they will miss more "layups" even though it sounds like an easy shot. Just look at yesterday's NBA highlights and you will see the degree of difficulty on some of those "layups" is a lot higher than on an outside shot.

I think you are right. IMO the weightage is around 2:1 in the favor of driving. So Inside Shot is important, but not nearly as much as Driving. Generally I think around 7 IS is good enough to hit 75%+ of your driving layups. (of course provided you have good driving relative to your opponent's OD/ID/SB) Also, I believe that when a player surpasses the defender and beats his OD and is at the ending stages of his layup and is facing a big man SB is taken into account much more than ID.

Success of layup shots are determined by a player's driving skill, right? So which defensive skill is correlated with defending a driving layup shot? Is it outside defense? Inside defense? shot blocking?

everyone misses a layup every now and again and you dont always know you are as wide open as you are (so the belief that a defender is close to you can put you off). Also if you get fouled a few times or in a big way it can knock you off your game so that you miss the shots youd normally make.

taking these aspects of real life basketball into buzzerbeater means that every now and again players will miss open layups. good simulation :)
