Finished first in my division, now going against the #2 from the other side in the finals. I was 16-6 during the season he was 17-5. One would think that since I won my division and he was 2nd in his that I would get the HCA but alas he does.

HCA in the finals is determined by overall record, so if he ended the season with a better record than you he will get it, regardless of placing within the division.

I was able to grasp that, just pointing out the lack of logic.

Well, my guess is they felt this method would be more "fair" in some instances where you would get to play someone who came out of a weaker conference as the #1 seed with a 15-7 record (sounds a little unlikely but definitely possible). If you happened to be in the stacked conference and ended up with the #2 seed with a 19-3 record, HCA might be the deciding factor.

Actually it's a kind of logic, it's straightforward maths, the team with the best records gets HCA
I see why you might not like it being at the wrong end of it. But the rule is known from the start of the season.
If you had HAC because you had a better ranking, your opponent may find it "illogical" because he had a better record than you, and hence could argue he made a better season.
It's a bit like the point average, the game use global PA for breaking ties, but it could also have used only the specific PA between the tied teams. Both have pros and cons.

Plus he also beat you in the one game you two played so you can't really complain.

Would it be fair if you had 17-5 and the guy with 16-6 had home court advantage?

actually if the roles were reversed and if this game acted like a league in real life would I would not be complaining at all. But I understand the logic in the way the game is set up, but it does fly in the face of logic because that is the advantage a division winner is supposed to have against a 2nd place team even one with a better record. It's not my fault he played in the tougher conference. If that is the logic then the way the playoffs should run is division winners get top 2 seeds automatically, the final 6 by record of finish regardless of conference because there are plenty of 5th place teams that missed out entirely while a 4th place team with a better record got in.
To wit

And that is just D I-III, 12 of 20 leagues teams from one conference were left out of the postseason while someone with a worse record played on and got the chance to promote. Nobody complains about that do they?

Celtics is divison winner this season, but they didn't have home count against Atlanta. Why?
Because home court base on season record only. Who cares about division.

Those are the rules. Unfortunately, you'll have to deal with it no matter how right you are. :)
