SINGAPORE DODGES A BULLET
Singapore came into the game as a 22 point favorite but the upstart U-21 team from Nippon had other ideas. After keeping the game close in the 1st Q, Singapore's players started to look a little distraught. The players must have been thinking this was going to be a scrimmage or an easy game but as halftime rolled around and the team from Nippon was still hanging in there. The home team( Singapore is hosting the tournament) kept on grinding and finally took the lead up over 10 and lead at the end of the 3rd Q by 12 points. And then it happened.....At the 7:53 minute mark in the 4th and down by 14, Kawagichi started yelling at the bench,"Refuse to lose" Refuse to lose" and then soon after the crowd started in as Nippon came all the way back and even led the game with 20 seconds left on the clock. Even when the game went to OT and Singapore went on a 7-0 run...Nippon kept on fighting and even know it wasn't to be, mainly because of 21 missed FT's(12-33), the team left the gym on a high note.
They can compete with anybody!!!
Game ball.....very difficult but Amori was great down the stretch. Wakatsuki was huge. When Matsumoto fouled out, he kept on getting rebound after rebound. Kanausuku led all scorers and he wasn't even going to be the starter(Kentaro had bad GS).
My only mistake was using SIT THEM for foul trouble. When Amori left the game in the first half, Ikouga didn't play very well at all...6 T/Os and 7 missed FTs...So he gets the OUCH!! Award.
Stay tuned next week..
