Hey everyone over on BB Australia I figured I would come here to ask an Australia related question!

My girlfriend is graduating at the end of this month. She wants to become a brain surgeon and plans on attending Lago Linda Medical School, she has two choices of schools to attend to get her degree. One in Canada and Avendale(or Avondale im not sure) in Australia. Just really wanted to ask if anyone has any history or knows about Avondale(or Avendale!?). What its like, what the city/town is like. Whether or not it is a good place to be. How you like the campus, just anything! It would be appreciated thanks!

Hey,

I am currently a med student at the University of Sydney. I assume that your girlfriend has already completed her undergraduate degree in medicine as what you have just said implies that she has already planned on specialising. I'm fairly certain Avondale does not offer any neuro related degrees, their science faculty might as a unit that's included in undergraduate psychology but Avondale does not have a Medical faculty, so your girlfriend might have given you wrong information to relay here, either that or you could help us out by giving us the exact name of the degree she plans to attend. As far as I'm concerned, there are only a few (I hesitate to say this) relevant universities that offer medicine and they are based in the big cities. Avondale is in Tamworth and is a good two hours away from Sydney, a small scale university. Tamworth is a great place, it's relatively quiet, peaceful and enjoys the generally good Australian weather. There isn't much city/urban life so if she enjoys the rush and buzz, it's not the greatest place. Either way, I'm sure she'll have a great time over here, however, I'm not sure what opportunities she might have in medical field (especially her dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon) if she graduates from Avondale. With that said, I do not know what the situation is in Canada so the best advice I can give is for her to do more research!

Hope that helped

Hi!

Thanks for the response! No, sorry I guess I was not clear. She is doing her undergradute degree in medicine in Avondale. Which she said would take 3 years, then she would move on to Lago Linda in Calfornia for 4 years and then residency for 6 years.
Tamworth sounds nice though! Thanks! Ill let her know :)

Ah!

In that case, she's free to do any undergraduate course she wants and get into post-grad medicine with whatever grades she averaged in her three years of undergrad. However, I'm not sure how much weighting Lago Linda/US colleges put onto the name and reputation of the university she attends in Australia, I worry because Avondale is not a that's brought up often at all. She should do some research on this matter. Another option would be to go to a university in a big city (city life/she'll have a blast) such as Sydney (obviously the only city in Australia that matters, I hope the other Aussies don't see this...).

Hope that helped again, good luck!

Well she told me that Avondale had a very high acceptance rate into Lago Linda(Somewhere in the 90s). Avondale is also an adventist university(if I remember correctly) and he is adventist(thats why she knows about it) so that plays a role. Acording to her, Lago Linda is the best of the best in what it does, but it is a private school so no none knows too much about it and Avondale has a high acceptance rate like I said to Lago Linda.

Thanks for the help!

No problemo,

I suppose that makes sense, some colleges do prefer students from certain universities for whatever reason. As long as it works out for her and she's certain.

Good luck!
