Well a few corrections. First those 5/1 players haven't reached their peak, you can feel free to train them, depending on how low the potential they probably could have a full season of training in them. Then to make things even more complex you know you can train players beyond their cap right? One of our Aussie legend trainers Robhoe of the Western Titans has been doing it for seasons with Udi Samdup who gets trained every time the team does two position training. His estimation is that it is 3-4 times as slow as normal.
Now the problem is that players normally hit their cap at ages 22-25 when their training slows down anyway, so if they are training at 1/3 speed, then cap and are at 1/4 of that you could train them for an entire season and not see a pop. Most people will stop long before that.
However if you trained a 5/1 18 year old for a season and capped them and really wanted to you could keep on training them. At age 19 instead of about 10-12 pops he would be getting 2-4 but still a lot. It is always funny to search the TL for low potential guys. There are a few $7,000+ role players for sale and 17 x $12,000+ 6th men certainly good enough for division IV teams or division III backups. There is even a guard with wondrous OD.
But don't take this as me advocating training low potential guys. The biggest mistake I made in this game was training low potential guys at the start. Now I only train superstar + potential.
