I can think of a couple different strategies for roster size. One would be to cut players until you just have 10 players or so that can carry the load in order to minimize salary costs. However, I've kept a couple more players in order that they can play alot in scrimmages so that other players won't have to get more minutes in a week than they have to. Usually I might have one player in a week over 72 min, and 3 or 4 important subs under 48 min. I want to get those guys over 48, but I don't want anyone to go over 72, so I have a couple of deep bench guys to play the other positions of the scrimmage.

In light of all that, what are recommended roster sizes, how small a roster can you have and still manage game shape well, and are there any other strategies that I can't think of?

I've trained effectively without scrimmages. I just see them as a way to destroy gameshape. Maybe if you're 3-man training, which I've never done. Otherwise, if you're training guards then in a 2-game week (without scrimmages) then playing each 48 minutes in each game is ideal.

Oh, no, having the extra game is absolutely the best way to manage game shape, plus it does either allow you to train an extra player or at least ensures that you can make up lost minutes for your two trainees if one of them fouls out, or if you decide to not play then 48 straight minutes so they perform better. If you don't have a horribly unbalanced team, have decent bench depth and set your lineups intelligently in the scrimmage, the only gameshape problems you should ever have are either going to be related to injury or the guy or two on the end of the bench who you don't care a whit about.

ditto. I have 12 players, 1 is Carbo, who sucks. just have the 1k guy have whatever minutes. 90 if you want to. then have your REAL roster have 55-70 minutes (which I think is the sweet spot for GS management) they have around there, just put in the people who don't have 48 and back up the players that have less than 60 minutes. that's what I do and it's good. I usually come out with coleman and catandil near 9 GS all the time along with Forjaz.......just got a new guy and he already poped to 9 GS too
