Fishbowl West MVPs Season 9 Week 1

Game 1 – Lewisham Wombats 117 defeat Moorditj Magick 97

The Fishbowl West kicked off with the highest ranked team in the competition taking on the lowest ranked team in the country. Few pundits gave the newest member of the calamari conference in II.4 much hope, with the Wombats looking to stamp some early authority on the Fishbowl. After a competitive first half, the Wombats took the game away from the Magick. Whether the wombats stepped up a gear after the rather colourful rant from mllama (which was filmed by one cheeky fan and posted on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbwkkXGmFrI ) or the Magick were just in shock from being in front at halftime is not yet clear.

Better start with some controversary in the voting straight away. While it was an all-round team effort by the Wombats, if you took Marcelo “Hot Rod” Rodriguez out of the Magick’s line-up this would have been a complete spanking, making him the very definition of the “Most Valuable Player.” The former Argentine u21, product of the Magick School for Guards and boggle enthusiast went head to head with one of Australia’s most famous guards, Hahi bin Awang, and won. Excellent performances from Birol Yalduz and Jackson Goodall, who again both out-played there direct opponents see them pick up the remaining votes.

Game 2 – Black Label Society 88 defeat Western Titans 65

The third meeting between these two teams saw a Western Titans team, with only one of the towers, out-classed by star-studded backcourt of Black Label Society. It was a rather unattractive game to watch (though perhaps my opinion is slightly jaded) with a total of 32 turnovers . The Titans attempt to smother BLS’s shooters with a 1-3-1 defence can at best be described as inconclusive, and at least one person (which may or not be the Titans manager) left the game wondering what might have happened if this game had been the BLS backcourt Vs the Titans front court which fully fit rosters would have allowed for.

The thing I like most about playing in the Fishbowl is the number of superstar Australian players that suit up each Friday, and nobody provides this more than Black Label Society. It is always hard to look past McArthur, and again it was a great performance from the Australian National Team PG, but you cannot disregard the performances of Gary Howorth (who gets the 2pts based on the outstanding defensive work against a man averaging 40pts so far this season), as well as Australian Legend Tyler Chowdary and Du Phung. Roman Muggleton gets the 1 vote for being the games top scorer.

Game 3 – Baxter Bogans 103 defeat Koopasaurus 91

There was no mistaking the desire of the Bogans in their opener against Koopasaurus, or that of Jose Gabriel Tesone. Tesone’s 12pts at quarter time were the difference between the two teams, and despite winning the 3rd and 4th periods, Koopasaurus could just not make up for their slow start to the game. This time, no one was brave enough to get close enough to the Koopasaurus locker room to capture the words of the coach, but frankly I think that the GM got the team’s storm-trooper dinosaur mascot to come in and give a force-full roar to the players (I can’t believe I got the type that out!) A more competitive second half, however the quick fire changes of the Koopasaurus line-up just could not make any significant dents in the 2-3 zone of the Bogans.

Tesone was the standout player of the game, with his 8-8FG to half-time leading to a 20/20 game from the Argentine big man. The rest were a toss-up, but some good performance off the bench from both Hare and Prokopov see them get the remaining votes.

Game 4 – Chumunga 97 defeat Chelsea Seagulls 85

I would not want to be a Seagull this week as there is surely lot of stair-running in their immediate future. 81-81 at the end of regulation time, Chumunga piled on 16pts in over-time (more than they scored in the 4th period) to make this battle of the keyway look pretty comfortable in the end. While Chumunga continued to look sharp in OT, the Seagulls looked like they needed to spend some more time pumping up their old-school Reebok Pumps (or perhaps that is what they were doing while Chumunga were putting on their little clinic)

It is another one of those games that make the MVP voting tough. Chumunga had such a well-rounded team effort that selecting standout players is difficult to select players. Berestetskiy gets the 3 votes for his classic centre performance (and hopefully his last because his name is just way too hard to type). Top scorer Krentschker gets the two votes, though I am sure that Yoda would have preferred him to have his centre going 0-5 3FG and to instead grab a few extra rebounds. Tidwell gets the one vote, as much for his defensive effort as his offensive effort.

Game 5 – Slam! 105 defeat Guanzheng Goldfish 84

Nearly 15000 fans travelled to see this battle between the Run and Gun of the Goldfish against the Look Inside of Slam!. In the end, it was a walk in the Concrete Jungle for Slam!, with Delgadillo, Luszcynski and Muresan absolutely dominating under the basket; while the Goldfish failed to live up to their potential from the perimeter. Besides, it is difficult to win a match when two of your starters foul out and you give your opponents 41 free throw attempts.

Hard to look past the 37pts of Delgadillo; even if he did foul out, he played 42mins and saw his starting opponent fouled out in only 21mins. Luszcynski had an outstanding game for such an old-timer and deserves the 2 points for not having a heart-attack. The one thing that the Goldfish can take out of this game is the performance of their Wang *cue childish snigger*. Slam’s starting PG could not keep his hands off Wang *cue more childish sniggering* and spent most of the game instead sitting on the bench watch Wang going hard *cue even more childish sniggering* for 21pts.

Game 6 – Urmummas 89 defeat Team Akuma 62

The final game of the round saw the much anticipated return of possibly the Fishbowl’s biggest legend, Ky “The Fat Cat” Smeltz. While he did not set the court alight, it was a solid performance from the man that at one point had the MVP trophy named after him. It was however still a night for the big men, as current Australian National Team player Sun Cunming, led what is the most expensive roster in the ABBL to an opening night win. TeamAkuma’s Aussie shooters of Abimbola and Maclean were just not able to make enough from beyond the arc to trouble this very talented Urmummas team.

Sun Cunming put in what was probably the best performance for the round, and leaps to the top of the MVP favourites race. 30pts, 10rbds and 4blks in only 27mins…Will anyone be able to stop him? Again, it is another Australian scoring MVP points, with Clinton Abimbola grabbing the two with a great performace. It somehow feels wrong to do it, but it is Smeltz’s direct opponent, Dennis Totengco getting the single vote, playing a solid second fiddle to the outstanding Cunming.

Game 1 – Lewisham Wombats 91 defeat Western TItans 76

Once again, The Fishbowl West kicked off with the highest ranked team in the competition taking to the court, again, against a Calamari from II.4 and, again, securing a comfortable win. Bento Filho made his return, but was clearly underprepared to take on the Season 20 ABBL MVP, with the wide-eyed Wombats Euro-Bigs making use of the Look Inside tactics of mllama http://blogs.abc.net.au/catalyst/images/2009/01/21/pic33....

Manfrotto was THE man on the court and the easy choice for the 3 votes. The great all-round performance from Hahi Bin Awang sees him secure the two votes, with Marino Gaggini picking up the single vote for his solid performance against last week’s vote getter Birol Yalduz.

Game 2 – Koopasaurus 112 defeat Black Label Society 97

While the Wombats were busy giving a lesson to the Western Titans, Lewi Arena played host to a classic battle between an inside team and an outside team. It was Koopasaurus who came out of the blocks with the greater intensity, with the big man rotation sharing the load wonderfully. With a 13pt lead at the end of the first period, Koopasaurus consolidated in the 2nd extending the lead. A token fightback was led by Gary Howorth in the 4th period, but it was just too late. Strike one blow for Inside teams!

All this talk about supertrawlers and fishing zones this week was obviously started by the performance of Avner Fishenzon. No troubles for the big Israeli in this game. You name a positive contribution and he did it. It wouldn’t be a Fishbowl vote without a ranga or two picking up votes, and there is just something I love about a C/PF who can draw a foul, so 2 votes to the man with the long name. Howorth top scored, with some good outside shooting, but he made his biggest showing in what was essentially junk time.

As you've still got a few games to go in round 2 to do, I'm happy to help out and do the writeups for round 3 if noone else wants to.

Game 3 – Urmummas 121 defeat Baxter Bogans 96

The delay this week was all about trying to come up with a Urmummas joke that would successfully tie in this outclassing of the Bogans, but…nothing came to mind so if anyone would like to fill in this depressing gap please do.

In this game, the Bogans only won in the offensive rebounds stat, but let’s face it, with Urmummas shooting at almost 60% from the field you don’t get a lot of chances to clean that offensive board. The Bogans gave themselves every chance of winning; setting up a 2-3 zone to try and shut down the Look Inside offense of Urmummas. However, there were just too many options for Urmummas who finished the game with seven players reaching double figure points.

Again, the most valuable player was not from the winning team. Davis Mercado was his team’s star, and this game would have looked even worse if it was not for his game high performance. With the way Urmummas shared the ball around all nigh tit made it difficult to have a stand out and to then split the players. Vahi gets the 2 votes. He had the ball on a string and was unstoppable on the drive. Totengco gets the 1 vote for his power-filled first period performance, leading his team to a 13pts 1st quarter lead.

Game 4 – Chumunga 123 defeat TeamAkuma 75

TeamAkuma and Chumunga travelled west for this game, and the whole thing was fast and furious. TeamAkuma went out to bomb it from behind the arc, putting up 34 3FG attempts; while Chumunga was about fast passing and running the court. These strategies saw Chumunga absolutely out-muscling the boys from TeamAkuma. Not much to say on this one really.

There was only one team out on the court that could get a rebound and Nigel Cubby led the way…3 votes for the Pom. Francis Masters out-played TeamAkuma at their own game…2 votes for the Yank. For the second week, Clinton Abimbola was the sole player flying the TeamAkuma flag…1 vote for Aussie.
