I agree with you, it will work more if invitations are send like that of other apps.

I was looking at my FB friends list and I didn't really see anybody who would actually join so I didn't bother. So, here is my question...Is it just sending an invite and you get free supporter or does the person have to actually join up to get the supporter?

That's your perception. If you send out invites, you may be surprised by some people that would join.

Well...I did invite some friends that play fantasy sports with and 6 or 7 joined. But I use FaceBook to communicate with family and I really can't see to many people joining from my friend list. Just me though.
