Look at the tactics he uses every game, his player's game shape and his players minutes. Minutes is important to look at because he may have already played them enough minutes for the week and he may not be playing his star players against you.
Another thing to do is look at things like offensive flow, inside scoring, outside scoring and see where his weaknesses are and then use a defense and offense that are able to use that weakness to your advantage.
Hope I helped :)

I personally feel having a very balanced Defense with little weakness goes a long way to beating better teams.

"The most important skill is everything!"

Outside defense, handling, driving, inside shot, and good team passing will win you the most games for the least money. There are certainly skills that are less efficient than others. The game is designed to reward smart, active managers.

Always win the game before your home game and your arena will be full or near full all the time. At home play TIE, because you don't care if you lose or not. Away play TIE against easy opponents and Normal against tough ones. And of course manage your game shape well.

That's how you maximize your incomes without investing anything.

I have a team with lower salaries then most other teams in my league. Is defence the most important factor in this game or balance in skills? I want to save as much money as I can but I also want to compete as much as I can. After today I will be in last place. Can somebody give me some advice?

Sometimes you have to look at your opponent, realize that you can't beat him and do other things that help your team in the long run like get your young guys training minutes, manage the minutes/gameshape of your star players and play TIE to build your team's enthusiasm. IMO this is one of the most important aspects of the game and something that most struggling teams can't grasp. Instead, they try to win every single game and end up getting nowhere.

In your case, I would look at your entire schedule and pick the teams that you can beat. Then concentrate on winning those games (using TIE/Crunch etc...) and save as much $$$ as possible. Later in the season, a playoffs approach, you can take measures such as adding a player and building enthusiasm in order to avoid relegation.

Try slower paced offenses to reduce the amount of possessions so that the game can stay as close as possible for a late surge.
