Not sure if it's discussed before, but why is it a TO when a player passes the ball out of bounds, but it's not a TO when a player knocks the ball out of bounds during a rebound attempt? Shouldn't both situations be TOs?
In the case of the player throwing it out of bounds, it is a direct case where the player's team had clear possession of the ball and then lost possession of the ball (without a shot involved). In the case of a fumbled rebound, neither team technically had possession and it was a loose ball after the missed shot, so there's no opportunity for a turnover. If the guy grabbed it and then after establishing possession lost it, of course, that would be a turnover.
