So I have I am in 3rd place and may have an opportunity to knock the 2 seed down to a 3 and bump me up to the 2. To do this i may have to play crunch time is it worth it? I know I would still be playing the same team in the first round of the playoffs but I would have home court advantage would that matter. Should I just keep 3rd?

There aren't a lot of games left to make up the enthusiasm loss.

You also get more cash from the home games. But if you need to do crunch now to win you are likely not going to be able to beat them in the finals so save your enthusiasm and stay at 3rd IMO.

As a consolation, you'll still get 1/3 of the ticket sales as the road team in the playoffs, you just won't have HCA.

i did not try to compare your team with that of the 2nd placed team but going by your words,you will have to put more into that game(either a CT vs normal or a CT vs TIE) so this means that the 2nd placed team is stronger than yours.
coming to the playoffs he most probably wont take you lightly and will use a PO CT.so that would mean that you both will have the same effort level in the game and that compared with his HCA(considering that you TIE and save some enthusiasm and he stays at 2nd spot) would make him a clear winner.so if you were to ask me (after reading your post),i would say that you have not got any chance of defeating that team in the PO.so i would suggest you to crunch the league game between your team and his and hope that you win and you move up to the 2nd spot so that ou can have the HCA and atleast get that 2/3 share of the ticket prices if not the win.

Does anyone know if HCA has any effect on games? like is a team playing at home more likely to play well or is a team on the road more likely to play worse? or does it not really matter where games are played?

to be a bit more precise, the home team gets bonuses in both of the defensive team ratings, and the rebounding rating. As far as I remember, it's a 10% boost to those ratings, but that may or may not be accurate.

A tool like Coach Parrot can help you get a feel for the HCA bonus, as well as the effect of enthusiasm (which also improves the defense and rebounding ratings).
