How important are a player's game ratings compared to his stats? Is it better to value players based on ratings or the actual stats that they are contributing to your team? For example, a player might shoot 5/30 and get a better rating than a player who shot 5/10. How should I judge my player's performance?

I'd have a look at both.

That said, the stats don't show you how your player performs on the defensive end, while the ratings do take this into account.

I see some players with the same ratings as each other (after considering game shape) but vastly different salaries. Should I target players with lower salaries who are getting the same ratings?

also take in considerations that secondaries aren't really taken into account in ratings, it's mostly primaries who get you big ratings

i disagree.a player with better secondaries will have better ratings.there is a team in my league whose 58k salary PF got an average rating of 16 in he previous season.
and the logic is simple.a player with better secondaries will perform better in areas where he is usually not expected to perform well so his rating would increase.

I agree, secondaries aren't important for ratings.

what I meant is, you'll gain more rating by adding primaries than adding secondaries

Look at high level teams SF, they're always the player with the lowest rating in the team
