Would it be a good idea to introduce a new tactic that influence the fouling tendency of your players. I know this just sounds as trying to get rid of missed minutes because of your trainees fouling out, but it would also add a new perspective to matches.

For example, if you know an opponent has bad FT shooting, you can opt to increase fouling intensity. For scrimmages it would make sense to tell your trainees to just let people have some free layups because getting trained is more important.

Thoughts?

You would have to pay the refs off. Under enthusiasm you could enter an amount of money to "influence" the match. ;)

Is this idea that bad that there's no serious response possible?

This has nothing to do with refs. I know players have an inherent foul tedency; one is quicker to foul than the other. But in different situation you could instruct your players to go for the foul to prevent easy baskets, or to tell them to back off a bit because it's just a scrimmage (no flagrants, a tiny smaller chance on injuries). It does make sense right?

I know what you mean. I don't see them making another match tactics option for telling your players to foul more or not.

I understand that implementing a new match tactic might be a bit too much for this, but it's just stupid to have players commit flagrant fouls in scrimmages and injuring eachother. Maybe then just adjust fouling rates in scrimmages. Simple, makes sense, everybody happy.

I think everybody watching Basketball has seen unneccessary rough fouls and even flagrants during "friendlies". Controlling the temper of your players is not easily done IRL either, so why should it be in a sim? Even though I agree that the intensity (even in fouls) is higher at playoff level basketball, there´s still LOADS of injuries actually happening through stupid plays in preseason and friendly games ...

I feel that it´s annoying, but it´s also simply true...

I think the hidden "aggressiveness" part of each player is enough for us to worry about. And also, I don't think it's really in the spirit of the game to encourage teams to have a "play dirty" option. Just thinking about what could happen conjures all sorts of crazy thoughts in my head. (And I'm not just being paranoid that everybody will always save that dirty game for my team, though that idea does come to mind...)

But, just thinking constructively here since I do not find the OP without merit, maybe it's worth discussing the possibility that Rival games should maybe have a slightly increased number of fouls. To go with this idea, we'd have to first agree that Rival games do indeed translate into more fouls, say in real life (somebody want to do some research into this?). Second, we'd have to figure out what to do about the "Rival imbalances" since it's not uncommon for some teams to to be assigned the Rival for more than 2 other teams (I seem to recall one team being assigned the Rival of 5 other teams once, but I can't remember where I saw that) while many teams are nobody's Rival. It really wouldn't be fair to increase the risk of injury from fouls more for some teams than others.

Don't ask what sort of Chunks they are, you probably don't want to know. Blowing Chunks since Season 4!

The coach has the ability to tell the player to stop defending those plays and just let the other team have buckets.

Two words: Dennis. Rodman.

I agree in this one. I believe that there's a hidden "hot-headed" skill for foul prone players. I even saw players with a very good skill set that commits more fouls since he was 18. I'm not sure if there's a hidden talent for players who draws more foul. Some of my hidden skill guesses are pass first players, Shot blocking players, pure scorers.
