I am new to the game, and still feeling my way around how everything works. I think I'm going to train 1-position Centers, but I don't want to buy players until I can see what my draft picks look like. Unfortunately, I haven't had time to scout almost anyone, so I really won't know much in the way of potential before I pick guys. I've only found one 5/3 guy, but nothing else.

Anyway, how should I go about picking other players? Draft at random, lean toward the ones with no information other than the 5 grey balls, or what? Or should I just give up and buy a few trainees?

Or, if someone can give me a quick rundown of what I should be doing as a new manager, that would be cool too :)

After the draft there will be tons of guys available. I'd just buy a couple then. Search for an 18 year old with at least All-Star potential and the taller the better. Usually the really tall ones have super ugly secondary skills though... if you can find someone around 7'1 or taller with decent passing, OD, JS, Driving (in that order), I'd grab him. You only need two main trainees and extra player (could just be someone else on your roster) to pick up the remaining minutes here and there.

Investing in the draft is a very risky business. You need to be really lucky either way, and if you want a good shot at a good player, you need to invest 100k+ at least. It's much safer to spend that money on buying trainees with skills you are sure of. Of course, it might not be as fun, but if you're still learning I wouldn't invest that much in trainees yet.

Also, I don't really share the opinion of all others when buying trainees. Most suggest to buy players with at least all-star potential, but I think if you're just learning the game you shouldn't spend too much money on players you probably won't train properly because you're still learning. I'd advise going for cheap players, spending at most 50k for a trainee. I personally think Star players will do, since you can buy them with good starting skills for 10k or less. After training them for 1-2 seasons you can keep them as good backup players or sell them for 75-200k, depending on how well you did with training. That way you can learn how to train while still making money, and use the money you have on your arena which should be nr 1 priority.

However, if you're sure about your abilities and want to do it right the first time, you can of course buy better trainees.
