If a team has been playing one defense (man to man) and then changes to a different defense (1-3-1) for the next game, does this change "hurt" the teams defensive effort?

It depends on the offence of opponet you are playing against, eg. If you are playing 1-3-1 against slow outside offence it'll be best one, if you played it against fast outside offence it'll be good but not great, if you played it against neutral or inside offence your team sucks in defence and there are great chances of your defeat.

Thank you for your excellent comments. I was wondering, if by just changing a "defensive tactic", it might hurt your team in the game the changer is made.

I now understand that the game results will depend on your teams player skills and training.
