I was in the transfer list and I saw an asterisk by one of the player's potential and I wanted to know what it meant.

He was from early in the game when there were not as many potentials.

Just to expand on what he said, it's only on players from before Season 5. If you hover over it, it actually says, "All players active before Season 5 have a potential rating of 'allstar'". There weren't any potentials before then.
