Using Draft Points

After 6 seasons playing BB, this will be my first time using draft points and evaluating talent.

I believe at my current rate - 2 draft points per week - I will have 23 points by draft date. Currently, I have 9 points.

Also, I want to use the draft points this season as next season I plan on being more competitive within my conference and will not have as good draft position. I estimate my draft position to be between 4th and 8th in my primary league and 1st in my Utopia league.

My question: How would you suggest I use the 23 points in this season's draft to best estimate the talent available?

Thanks

23 points isn't a lot, but here we go. Do the scouting combine first. Then sort by age and height. If there are more than 10 1 and 2 ball 18 year olds, consider the Group Demonstration. Then pick out some 18 year olds that have the height you want and scout them. If you have any points left over, try and interview one or two 5 ball 18 year olds (if any).

You might not have enough points to really do the group demo, so I would scout 9 18 year olds with the height you like and hope there are one or two 5 ball guys.

I think you should wait to scout next year.

I'd advise against using the scouting combine, as you don't have enough points afterwards to scout and interview prospects. You only use the combine if you're putting a lot of points in the draft so you can save points by not scouting 19 year olds, but since you have limited points only a couple (certainly not more than 10) points will be wasted on 19 year olds.

I'd say you do the Group Demonstration to get the first scouting reports of as many players possible (I think 19 reports for 10 points instead of 19 points). Then you'll have 13 points remaining so you can do 6 interviews, and there will probably be 7-8 4 or 5 ball star rating players in the 19. Then you'll have to hope there's a 4-5 star potential 18 year old between the 6 players you can interview, and that that one won't be picked before you.

As said, 23 points is very little for a decent draft. I'd wait until you have a top 4 position and get more scout points in the meantime, maybe when you promote.

Does next year mean roughly 4 seasons later?

I think he meant next season.

Yes, the end of this season.

I'll have the #1 pick in Utopia, so I will definitely use draft points.
In future seasons, I'll be using cash for player acquisition and salaries to be competitive, not to acquire more draft points, so I will definitely take a shot at this season's draft.

Thanks for the advice.

There should come a time (hopefully for you rather sooner than later) that you will promote, and after promotion you'll probably have a hard time competing, meaning you'll probably end up in a good draft position. You can save some more scouting points in the meantime, and then will be a perfect time to use them, as opposed to this season.

If you do insist, my previous advice on how to spend them would be wise.

I agree, although I've tended to have the annoying tendency of doing well when I promote too. ;)
