I recently bought a player that has a 23k salary with great stats and star potential, but he is 34. When will his salary start going down? What should I do to make sure his stats don't get worse?

I would sell him, he will lose skills even if you have a career extension trainer.
I would sell him when he is still worth something.

His skills are already going down. Training him is counter productive at this point.

A career extension makes sure that their skills don't go down without training them.
Why wouldanyone think about training him, he would never pop just drop.

To actually answer your question; salary drops during the offseason of each season. During the offseason, new salaries are calculated based upon the (lower) skills of older player and possibly a change in salary formula. So the salary of your player will stay the same until the end of this season. His skills will drop though, with possible drops every week.

There is little you can do to prevent this, you could get a trainer with a specialization in career extension to slow the drops a tiny bit, but best would be just to live with the fact that his skills will drop.
