It's really impressive what he did off the court.

There are better articles, but here's one of the first i clicked on:
Smith was instrumental in desegregating Chapel Hill, then in desegregating the entire Atlantic Coast Conference. He used his position of power to essentially force restaurants to serve black customers at a time when some establishments in Chapel Hill would not, helped a black man buy a home in an all-white neighborhood, and, in 1966, enrolled Charlie Scott, who became the first African-American scholarship athlete at North Carolina.

Furthermore, Smith protested, among other things, the Vietnam War, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and the death penalty. In 1998, according to a story in the University Gazette, Smith appeared at a clemency hearing for a death-row inmate and told then-Governor Jim Hunt, right to his face, "You're a murderer. The death penalty makes all of us murders."

one of the great things about Coach Smith was that he had a remarkable memory and literally would hand out the mail at his summer camp personally to every camper. People would marvel that they would meet him one time, see him again years later and that not only would he remember them but would remember their childrens names.

And of course the willingness to put himself out there for what he believed in, oh and he won a boatload of games.

My brother dealt a lot with him back in the mid 80's when he was at UNC law and was one of the managers in the ticket office at the end of the Carmicheal era. coach was always very cool about letting big bro hook up his little bro and his old man for occassions like the original final game. Funny thing is it took the Dean Dome a few months extra to be game ready and they still were in the old hallowed hall for a few games the next season which means that if you go to the 1hr 34min 30 second mark you will see what was really the final shot in carmichael. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbDXZY8is3U

That actually is a cool story.

(ETA - not to be confused with the sarcastic "cool story bro" meme)
