If an NBA game is a blowout, do you see one team put a lineup of reserves on the floor against the other team's starters just to watch their big lead disappear? It doesn't happen.
It happens all the time in the NBA. The reserves play for the leading team, the starters stay in until the last two minutes. If the game starts to get close (usually 10 or less), the starters for the winning team come back out and try to hold the lead. If it never gets back within 10, the reserves for the losing team will usually just play out the end of the game since they know there is no coming back.
I agree, though, that you should never lose a game like the way you say happened. Once it is within 10 again, the starters should be back on the court to hold on to the win.
Watching the replay, 4 of the 5 the starters for the Beavers came back in in the 4th quarter at 8:59 (39 minutes in the replay). The PF Foremski didn't because he had 6 fouls and Pujats had to play for him. Matthew Macken, the starting SF, who is the primary scorer in the Patient offense went 2-6. van Plateringen went 1-4. The whole team went 3-19. Macken and van Plateringen made the only baskets in the 4th.
At 5:14, DinamoRiga sat down three starters and brought them back around 2:30.
Finally, the Beavers had a chance to win it with 6 seconds left out of a timeout and 4 of 5 starters on the court and Pujats, the backup PF took and missed the last second shot.
In my opinion, there isn't anything wrong with the GE. Just some missed shots for the Beavers and good shooting for DinamoRiga.
