Many players seem to have popped in XP recently. Was this just some coincidence or did some calculations run late?

What do you consider lately? Experience is awarded as a result of playing games. There shouldn't be any delays affecting that.

Last week.

I don't know if XP Pops only at the same time as Training happens or more often. However half out NT has popped and two of my players - probably just a coincidence.
