This was my suggestion in another thread to help prevent new players from overspending on potential.

I think a potential (pun intended) solution to the problem would be to give players a label based on their current skills.

Current Ability: Starter
Potential Ability: MVP

I think it might also be a good idea to decrease potential on players that are not getting trained. If I have an 18 year old HOF sit on my bench and not get training for 3 seasons, he will never been able to get to his HOF potential. I think both of these things would help prevent new players from overspending on potential.

Hmm, I think this is on the verge of being brilliant. There's just one thing missing I think...

Nice one! I'd just reduce even more the time before the dropping start, like 1 drop of potential per not trained season.

Ah, now it sounds even better.

Yeah that was just an example. I don't know what the correct rate of decrease should be but if its impossible to reach the soft or hard cap of a guy by like 27-28 because he wasn't trained he shouldn't be that potential.

If we got rid of the Player Role function and instituted this instead I would be one happy camper

I agree completely. Mostly because it will prove less misleading for newbies who think buying an untrained 21yo with MVP potential is a good deal.

I'd like to expand the idea, so that well trained players below a certain potentail can experience an increase, to reward good training - that way bad potential players (and the draft is full of those) can become solid role players or even cornerstones of lower div teams.

Plus untapped players with high potential should retain their training speed, so even if sb. picks them up later in their career, we can still work with them.

I think potential shouldn't have word ratings. When inexperienced managers see the MVP potential, even if he's 23 with a 3k salary they think he's going to one day be an MVP. This wouldn't be a problem if his potential was just '10.'
