Here we are again. Hopefully this season will be better than last but hard to tell for the moment.

It's Consolation year, which means we'll play four home games and four away games, two of which I'd expect to know my opponents now, but the draw seems to be late. Though not so late that we need to worry about it. I was actually waiting for the draw before making this post but since we're playing a scrimmage tomorrow I thought I'd start it now.

Only 21yos in the this week's squad. And it is just for this week. So if your player isn't in it, don't worry, he could be in next week.

Draw made for the consolation. Away to Wales. Home to India. 21yos being discharged today. I have an idea of who might make the squad but as always its heavily dependent on game shape. 8 or 9 is better, so everyone should try to get as close to 60 minutes for their players. Anyone who plays major minutes in three games is likely not to make the squad no matter what his game shape. I can't remove players from the squad after the weekend so I only want players I feel I can rely on.

Season starts today. Probably the only away game this season where we don't need a passport. Armed guards probably, but no passports.

As always, it was difficult picking the opening squad. Some people will be disappointed; some will be pleasantly surprised. I can't help that either way. Game shape was an important factor, as were skill levels.

Those players I have not picked today: the season isn't over. There are 6 more slots for players and its a long season, they will be used. Game shape can change and unlike with most club teams, NT lineups can change weekly, depending on tactics.

First game of the season went reasonably well. We beat Wales on their own court fairly comfortably, as of course we should, but a 40pt win is certainly not to be sniffed at. Our ratings look similar to last season's first game so at first glance it would appear I haven't been able to improve things, but there were little things that I did like.

What I'd particularly like to point to is the 23 turnovers we forced in the game, which included 14 steals, and also the 12 blocks. This is key for how I want my teams to defend. I would like to see us as a country with teams that can defend like that at both u21 and NT level. We're not a big country, but by being smart we can produce the players needed to put us in a position to compete with bigger nations.

First home game of the season today. I was very late getting the lineup set, and probably won't have time to do it any later than this. Only one addition today, though several players, including a few 20yos were close. There's still hope for those players who remain in good shape so don't lose heart.

I've been asked about the draw for the consolation. What happens is the 74 teams who enter the consolation in week one have two games (presumably picked at random) drawn at the beginning of the season. Then after week two, the teams that haven't made the next stage of the World Championship are "parachuted" in to the consolation (with an 0-2 record) and the remaining six games are then drawn. (Again, I believe this is random).

Pretty sure Manchester is actually light blue but yes you were right. I'm going to state in public, in the hope that 6 other coaches are watching, that I never use gdp.

As for Monday's game, some decent performances, though we were heavily outrebounded. We did shoot well though, playing motion, and that led to a 36pt win. Other little things I liked included two players having three steals each and one player with four blocks. The 3-2 defence we played had a little to do with that, plus of course the players' skills.

As with last week, several players close to a call up, but in the end narrowly missed out. With only 3 roster spots left I couldn't justify (to myself) using any more. There could always be emergencies and its better to have room for callups, especially with so many weeks remaining.

At half time things didn't look good. I could barely eat my burger (we brought food with us, none of us wanted to eat bagpipes while we listened to the Scots play their haggises.) We were six down. We were turning the ball over, not rebounding very well, and not really passing well.

The Scots had played their starters for most of the half, whereas our coach (I had nothing to do with it sadly) played our backups quite a bit more than usual, and so we had hopes that the second half might see them tire.

I'm sure they did, but we were back in the game before they'd tired and in the end ran out fairly comfortable winners. It was a very good second half performance to contrast with the poor first half.

Kaur, who isn't an SF but played there top scored. When you play a 3-2 there's no real necessity for a proper SF and so a guard fits there more easily than with man to man. He was also our best passer. And Ernesto Corral, as well as being our top scoring big man, also contributed 3 steals and 4 blocks.
