how do you get your good players to play the majority of the minutes? I have a couple of good players but they don't play enoug!!!!

Your players subbed out due to garbage time. When you are up by a considerable amount, your coach will bench your starters.

but what about in close games? I have my lineup set to "strictly follow depth chart" just fyi

In the substitution option ,instead of "let coach decide" option use "strictly follow depth chart." Further, in foul trouble option use "let them play" so they play till they foul out. Set the player you want as the primary starter, backup1 and backup2. This should give you a solid 48 minutes unless they get injured during the game or they foul out.
