I thought I understood what the introduction of "potential" meant to the game but after receiving a mail from a friend I suddenly have a doubt.
Concerning the "old" players (those created before the change) does their all-star potential limit them exactly the same way as the newly created ones? Or does the asterisk next to them mean something special?

Yes, allstar potential means the same thing for players with and without the asterisk. The asterisk is merely a reminder — and a notification for new users — of why there are so many potential allstars in the game.
