Malta beat Pilipinas in an OT scrimmage thriller, 125-122

Our young boys tried their best, even forcing an overtime pero hindi tayo nakalayo sa 2nd half. On the bright side naman, we assisted on 36 of 50 field goals natin, that's 72%! Pero syemrpre, as usual, outrebounded na naman tayo by quite a margin. Nagpaulan din sila ng tres sa 4th quarter kaya talaga namang we should give props to them. Palakpakan pa rin sa mga bata natin for doing their best. We will see more of them kung papalarin silang makapasok sa final NT roster natin this season (or in the future). For the meantime, let's continue training for our future pa to improve yung pool of players natin. We are getting there naman gradually.

Wala pa tayong schedule for the consolation tournament kaya I'll continue scouting muna and wait until after the weekend league games bago magtawag ng first batch natin para sa conso.

Maraming salamat sa patuloy na pagsuporta at good luck sa atin this season.

Pilipinas escapes Japan's double GDP at home, 84-71

Japan was plagued by turnovers and foul trouble throughout the game. 3 of their starters were already in foul trouble in the 1st half and we managed to limit the impact of their best players. The team was led by Francis Edano with 22pts & 10rebs. Alan Marquese (18pts, 8rebs) and Leorio Lovino (13pts, 7rebs, 3asts) also helped in fueling our offense.

In our first game last week, we faced Pakistan and beat them 110-69 on the road. Raymund Duraliza led the team off the bench after Freddy Villaprudente (5pts, 2 of 2 from the field) went down due to injury in the 3rd minute of the 1st quarter. Duraliza put up 26pts, 4rebs, 4asts and 4stls. He was helped out by Peter Heyrosa with 18pts, 7rebs and 2asts shooting an efficient 8 of 11 from the field.

Next week, we will be facing our 3rd Asia team in New Zealand. I am hoping for better game shape for all our players (called and not yet called) to provide us more variety in putting a lineup.

We still have a long way to go.

Pilipinas leaves New Zealand with the W, 95-76

A tightly contested 1st half had us only leading by 3 at the break. NZ decided to have an 8-0 to start the 3rd quarter before Team Pilipinas reined them in and get on a run of their own. Pilipinas held NZ scoreless for more than 5 minutes and closing the quarter with a 9-point lead. In the 4th, we managed to widen the gap by outscoring them by 10pts and allowing only 15pts to end the game.

The team was led by an efficient scoring from Bill del Prado (21pts, 10 of 15 from the field) and Francis Edano (17pts, 9rebs, 2asts, 2stls, 7 of 10 from the field). Raymund Duraliza also contributed with 13pts, 8rebs, 4asts and 4stls while Alan Marquese had himself an 8-5-10-1-1 game (all points from the FT line). The bench was led by Freddy Villaprudente with 11pts in 10 minutes of play.

Next week, we will be at home against Kazakhstan then France the week after that. Next training update should be the springboard for our top players, sana makalaro sila sa big games natin in the coming weeks.

Pilipinas trounced Kazakhstan, 113-43

Foul trouble haunted Pete Libron and Melvin Chan throughout the game but the trio of Jiffrey Sumalapao, Jacinto Estorninos and Raymund Duraliza combined for 63 of the 92pts scored in 3 quarters. The starters did not bother to play the last frame of the game as the bench mob was able to hold the Kazakhs to 6pts.

Estorninos put up 25pts on 9 of 13 shooting (7 of 8 from beyond the arc). Duraliza contributed 22pts (7 of 13 from the field) & 5rebs while Sumalapao 16pts and 5asts on 6 of 9 shooting. Off the bench, James Mabaquiao (13pts, 9rebs, 2blks) and Freddy Villaprudente (12pts, 2rebs, 2asts, 2stls, 1blk) led the team en route to a dominant win. Special mention to Libron who nabbed 22rebs and dished out 6asts and blocked 3 shots despite the foul trouble. And Royce Cardino with 14rebs amd 3blks off the bench.

Next week will be the real challenge as we'll be facing the undefeated France team (Ranked#3).

Pilipinas falls in France, 99-81

France put up a show for the home crowd. Although we double GDP'd them, it was not enough to keep the game close as the French were able to move ahead in the 2nd half.

Jacinto Estorninos led Pilipinas with 32pts, 6rebs, 2asts & 2stls while shooting 12 of 22 from the field. James Mabaquiao contributed 11pts, 6rebs & 2blks and Leorio Lovino put up 11pts, 5asts, 4rebs.

Next week, we will be back at home against Latvija.

Latvija hands Pilipinas its 2nd defeat, 100-88

Right out of the gate, the better effort from the Latvians proved to be the game changer as they went on to grab a substantial lead in Q1. Same story sa Q2 with Pilipinas using 3 timeouts already before halftime. The 2nd half was better for us as we put a better effort to chase the lead but proved to be fruitless as they managed to keep us at bay.

Pilipinas was led by Leorio Lovino with 28pts and 4rebs. Francis Ednao with 10pts and 16rebs while the rest of the starters put up a stinker.

This game proved that rankings don't matter much against Euro teams.

Next week will be our last Euro team sa group phase. We will do our best para manalo against Danmark. We need to win our next 2 games para may chance tayong makapasok sa Knockout round. Please help to improve the game shape sa mga NT players natin ngayon. We still have 2 empty slots kaya baka mag-add pa tayo kung kakailanganin.

Pilipinas beat Danmark on the road, 74-60

This was an ugly win for us at nagkamali rin tayo ng GDP pero we still managed a way at their home floor. Ang highest scorer natin ay si Estorninos with 12pts and 8rebs. We shot 37% from the field and went 0-7 beyond the arc.

Pilipinas beat Bolivia at home, 131-53

This was the last game of the group phase at wala na ring bearing sa kanila kaya siguro hindi sila nag-normal or crunch. We had 8 players in double-digit scoring with Mabaquiao leading the charge off the bench with 22pts, 7rebs on 8 of 12 shooting. Francis Edano had himself a 14-18 double-double before giving the full reins to Mabaquiao.

We managed to finish 19th kaya naman katapat natin ngayon ang 14th place Romania. We gave more effort sa game at their home kaya tingnan natin if we can manage to squeak into the next round.

Good luck to us at maraming salamat sa lahat nang patuloy na sumusuporta sa National Team natin.

Pilipinas knocked out by Romania, 114-97

Team Pilipinas failed to make it out of Romania with the W. We did put more effort but failed to hit our GDP. We trailed from the get-go and never really recovered.

Leorio Lovino led the team with 42pts and 2asts on 15-25 shooting, 5-6 beyond the arc and 7-8 from the line. Jacinto Estorninos added 25pts, 7rebs, 3asts but shot an abysmal 5-21 from the field redeemed by his 15-15 performance from the line. No other player scored in double figures. James Mabaquiao contributed 7pts and 6rebs while Pete Libron scored 7pts and 12rebs.

This match ended our consolation tournament. For the remaining weeks this season, puro scrimmages na lang tayo. Best time give out game time for those players who deserved it this season. I might remove some players from the season to start scouting na rin but rest assured na part pa rin sila ng team. Huwag mahihiyang mag-pm kung may inquiry about your player's position sa National Team natin. Competition for a spot in the team is healthy para sa atin considering we need more trainers to train for our future.
