OR 1.0 TR 2.9
AST 5.9 TO 0.7
STL 2.3 BLK 0.1 PF 1.7
PPG 14.3
RATING 9.2

9.2 is super high. I don't see a single thing he's doing well. Shot is sub .400 for a Guard, 3P is almost 30%, even FTs only flirting with 70%. He's not getting it off Shooting Efficiency.

2.9 Rebounds... I mean he's a Guard so I get it, but he's not Magic Johnson Rebounding out there.

5.9 Assists doesn't suck, but it's not great... I do like the Ration for AST/TO though, he's doing that rather well.

Steals are legit. 2.3 is good, but not 9.2 good. Blocks aren't helping him, again he's a guard but I might get it if he was swatting constantly and that boosted the Rating.

And we discussed Efficiency, he's not a Bulk Scorer either at 14.3 PPG.

So... what does the 9.2 mean then? How did he earn that?

For contrast I give you a 7.8, a 7.8 that I can see how he got there.

AST 0.7 TO 1.4
STL 1.0 BLK 1.7 PF 1.4
PPG 10.0 RATING 7.8

45% from the Floor, that's not Big Man good but that's pretty solid. 3P doesn't really matter, but even that's better that Wagner. FT is small sample size but that 75% is better.

He's a big man so 3.0 and 9.4 on the Boards isn't Rodman and Barkley, but he's working.

Okay, he's Weak on AST and AST/TO Rate, but I'm working on that.

DEFENSE! Steal a Game and over 1.5 Blocks a Game. He's not Mutumbo, but he does both parts of the D while Rebounding well.

10.0 PPG. Not a lot, but we're talking about a 7.8 Rating, that gives you 10 Points, 1 Steal and 1.5 Blocks with 9.4 Boards a night. An almost Double Double consistently, with extra Defense, that isn't a black hole on Efficiency or Points. If I could flip his Assists with his Turn Overs I'd be VERY HAPPY with this Production. So he's not great, but 7.8 isn't great, I get this Rating.

So what gives with Wagner?

It's hard to compare guards to centers. But the thing that stands out to me is that Wagner has double the salary of the other guy. Since big men train so much faster, that tells me that Wagner probably has a lot more TSP.

Defense has a lot to do with rating, so if you look at Wagners OD vs Vanneste's ID, that ought to tell you a lot

If I were you, I'd concentrate on training the 19 year olds. You have 2 MVPs. They won't be great because the 18 year old season is so important. But they can be great for you if you train them right.

This is what I don't understand. I would THINK that 'Rating', especially an individual one for a specific game, would be 'How Well Player Played THIS Game'... so not sure why TSP or Salary would even matter, or any Attribute... only what the Game Production would.

That's what is throwing me off.

Stats only tell one side of the story. They don't really keep defensive stats. So you don't know how well a player defended

But even in the stats you listed, Wagner scores more per game and his assist to turnover ratio is over 6-1. The other guy scores 10 per game and he has more turnovers than assists. Wagner has put up more shots and gotten to the line a lot more too.

I only list salary and TSP because they indicate how many skills a player has, And a player that can do many things is better than a player that only does one thing well.

I can only tell you that I have played the game for a while now (since season 32). I don't pretend to know everything about the game. There is a lot that frankly mystifies me. But the players that do play at a very high level all say one thing. That defense is more important than anything else. And my own experience is that players that score a lot and have low ratings tend to be not very good defensively.
