its visible the player is not value so high...

"There have been 5 recent transfers of 24-26 year old players of superstar potential with 35000-70000 salary and more than 85 guard and 0-19 forward skill points. Armando Caterina is probably worse than all 5 of these players, but the few that are most similar have been selling for around $ 500 000 to $ 500 000."

Why did you set autobid to a price you didn't want to pay?

The bid history is visible under the "Show/hide last transfer bid history" link on the player's page. Looks like two different teams were bidding his value up, neither of which were the previous owner. The last team bidding is a team that just promoted to division 3 and is looking to expand his roster for the new league, so it makes sense to me that he would be pursuing a player like this, maybe he got a little emotional as your auto-bid reraised him a bit further than he really should have / intended to, but it's a big jump from there to assume malice.

You set the auto bid feature to get him but didnt expect anybody to come close to your auto bid maximum amount. This was to ensure that you get him no matter what. Hardly seems fair of you for other managers who might want to try and get him for a good price. Yet somehow a few peeps bid on it until the price came close to your maximum bid but wasnt enough to outbid you. You gambled and somehow paid too much.

That happens in the transfer list everyone evaluates player worth differently. It just so happens 1 or 2 managers also liked that particular player. You can check if the player who bid on it is also the same country as the owner if you suspect foul play.
That sucks but its hard to sympathize with your case to be honest. Anyone who sets an amount that high in autobid and not willing to pay it. It doesnt seem you play fair as well.
