In a league there are 2 sets of 8 teams. The top 4 teams get promoted. The 5th team stay where they are. The last team gets relegated, and the 6th-8th place teams go to the relegation playoffs. Am I getting this right?

The top 4 teams do not get promoted - only the league champion is promoted (besides any bot cleanup).

The rest is correct.

The top 4 in both conferences are in the promotion playoffs, with only the winner of the playoffs being promoted, with the other 7 staying put. The Playoff bracket shows the matchups if the season were over (1st vs. 4th and 2nd vs 3rd in each conference)

5th place teams stay put.

6th place team from one conference plays a best of 3 series with the 7th place team of the opposite conference, with the loser relegating.

8th place teams relegate.

Except nobody actually relegates from D.IV in the USA. So if you manage to squeeze into 6th or 7th place, you will start a relegation playoff on Tuesday. If you finish 8th, you will not have a game on Tuesday.

Next Thursday is an ordinary scrimmage opportunity.

Saturday a week, you will either be playing the 2nd game of a "relegation" playoff series or will have a scrimmage scheduled for you.
