It is a number calculated using all the skills of a player, including his game shape which is a very significant factor.
Imagine if you calculated a
single
number based on a person's weight, height, and IQ. A large number might indicate that someone is moderately tall, heavy, and intelligent. Or it might mean an extremely obese person of average intelligence and height.
What matters in a game are the individual skills of the players. Combining them all into a single number doesn't give you any insight into the individual skills.

Better for what?
Players with more skills and/or game shape will generally have higher DMIs.
